Mandatory Training Requirement for Level III Reserve Officers

In order to enhance, expand and professionalize the Department’s Reserve Corps, the Chief of Police and Police Commission recently approved a series of 20 initiatives that are designed to positively change the Corps. One of the initiatives was a requirement for all Level III reserve officers to attend a minimum of 16 hours of in-service training every 24 months. It is believed that such training will not only make Level III reserve officers more professional but will enable them to provide better service to the public.

Effective immediately, all Level III reserve officers are required to attend 16 hours of in-service training every 24 months. Volunteer Services Section [VSS (Reserve Unit)] will soon publish an annual schedule of training available to all Level III reserve officers. It should be noted that the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) has no requirement for Level III reserve officers to attend in-service, continuing professional training. This requirement is the sole mandate of this Department. As such, it is not required that reserve officers attend POST approved training. Area/Divisional training, POST approved or otherwise, will count toward the 16-hour requirement.

It is the responsibility of the concerned reserve coordinator and individual reserve officers to ensure that they attend the required amount of training every 24 months. Should any commanding officer, reserve coordinator or reserve officer have suggestions regarding areas/subjects where training is needed, they are encouraged to call VSS at (213) 485-4097.
